Name: Crystal Papineau

Age: 35

Date of Death: Jan. 8, 2019

Cause of Death: Papineau was killed by a clothing donation bin.

Summary: “She was very outgoing and had a lot of love other people and always saw the optimistic side of things,” Victoria James, who calls herself Papineau’s best friend, told Global News.

On a cold night in January, the temperature was below freezing, and Crystal Papineau had no place to go. Toronto’s women’s shelters, respite centres and drop-in facilities were all full or over capacity.

The 35-year-old was known for her generosity, often handing out clothing, pulled from donation bins, to people on the street. That night her generosity killed her. She was strangled by a clothing donation bin’s metal jaws.

Gerald Kuno, Papineau’s father, told CBC, “She was there long enough she was able to make a phone call, but by the time someone found her she was already dead. Eight minutes."

"The top came down, got her on the head, and the bottom one got her on the neck," Kuno told CBC.
